Facilities

The Huerto Alegre farm school is located in the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park at 1,200 meters above sea level in an old reconstructed Andalusian farmhouse; a privileged place to contemplate beautiful landscapes and a great diversity of plant and animal species.

The farm building is able to house groups in multiple rooms, with central heating and large comfortable spaces which are equipped for the different programs.

Large windows allow you to enjoy the sun in winter and breathtaking landscapes that have a special light at sunrise and sunset. The building is an example of traditional architecture but it has undergone modern restoration to prepare it for its new didactic and rural use. This has allowed a careful integration of the building into the landscape, which is sustainable and respectful to the environment it is located in.

The natural environment surrounding the school farm

“An enchanted forest” of old trees, moss covered branches and invisible birds, welcomes groups that set out from the farm school to visit the natural park. It is the southernmost Pyrenean oak forest in the Iberian peninsula, a space of great ecological value, which surprises and invites us to imagine, explore, dream and more.

In the clearings of the forest, you will find pleasant meadows where cattle graze. And further afield, entering the mountains: holm oaks, pines, wickers, hawthorns, wild rose bushes, old scrapers, rockrose, etc. offer us a beautiful composition of colorsin autumn and spring. In addition, it is easy to see mountain goats, Bonelli’s and short-toed eagles, squirrels, and a great diversity of insects on the routes. We will teach you to discover the tracks of wild boars, badgers, and foxes as well as the remains of farmhouses and see traditional trades that are carried out in the area.

From the farm school you can see the Lopera peak (1,409 m), one of the most beautiful places in the mountains.

In a two-hour walk, you can climb to its summit and enjoy the view of spectacular landscapes with rugged mountains that fall away into the sea, as well as contemplate the wonderful white and luminous image of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Very close to the farm school is the river, Río Verde, which boasts one of the most beautiful canyoning routes in Andalusia.
